Catherine Coley and Christina Vad loved frequenting the Honeysuckle Cafe & Bar in downtown Carrboro – but they never expected it would lead to owning their own cafe in the very same spot four years later.
But sure enough, the coworkers and friends moved forward to open Lanza’s Cafe on Main Street in August 2021. The cafe is named in honor of Vad’s late father, whom she cared for while simultaneously working at her former job. Vad’s father owned his own restaurant and bar in Upstate New York for 40 years.
Prior to purchasing the cafe, the two envisioned a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals taking care of loved ones while still working.
“To be any professional, having to take care of anyone really, but having to take care of a loved one that is sick requires mental, physical, and monetary dedication,” Coley said. “I don’t know how people would do that if they didn’t have the luxuries that we had at that time to be able to care for him, so that’s kind of where the nonprofit idea came from.”
While they don’t have an exact plan yet, the co-owners hope to connect this cafe to their original nonprofit vision.
“When we found out that the cafe was potentially for sale and reached out, we said, ‘Man, we could really use that as a jumping off point,’” Coley said.
Those who knew The Honeysuckle’s menu won’t be disappointed by Lanza’s similar range of offerings: the business is offering drinks ranging from coffee and tea to beer and wine. For food, the cafe has a menu filled with small bites, local pastries, smoothies and treats.
Lanza’s Cafe is keeping these products local. The cafe still has a taste of The Honeysuckle Tea House on their menu, offering some of its teas and meads. Pastries are sourced from Ninth Street Bakery in Durham, and other products on the menu are primarily sourced from local businesses.
Coley and Vad are also working to expand the cafe to offer a full lunch and dinner menu.
“We’re hoping to have flatbread pizzas and homemade raviolis, and we can’t do that right now with the space that we have,” Vad said. “But we’ve been working with engineers and things to expand.”
The two hope to have a full kitchen offered by the summer. Right now, the two are ensuring the cafe serves as a hub for community connection.
“We thought it could be a really good place to just bring the community and people together; a platform just to share in what we like to do, and we just really enjoy making people happy, coming together, and having good discussions,” Vad said.
To encourage this, the cafe hosts events multiple nights a week, including Chess Wednesdays, Trivia Night Thursdays, and multiple other weekly and seasonal gatherings.
To visit Lanza’s cafe, head to 601 W Main Street in Carrboro. You can also keep up with the cafe on Instagram. The website is coming soon.
