FLINT, MI -- Two years and one day later, Carriage Town’s The Good Beans Cafe in Flint is ready to reopen next week.

The neighborhood coffee shop that closed on March 13, 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic first began, will reopen three days a week starting on Monday, March 14.

The Good Beans Cafe, which opened in 2000, is located on the corner of Grand Traverse Street and 1st Avenue in the historic Carriage Town neighborhood not far from Atwood Stadium.

When the cafe reopens, business hours will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a slightly altered menu including some new items and others removed.

The Good Beans owner Ken Van Wagoner said he wants to “double down” on the cafe’s identity of educating the community on espresso-based beverages as the coffee shop reopens.

“We are really going to try to focus on those kinds of beverages,” he said.

A fellow local business, Flint Trading Co., expressed their excitement at the news on social media this week.

“We are THRILLED to have this Flint staple reopening after the last two years and we are twice as thrilled to order Old Flannel Shirts again, the most comforting latte ever,” a March 8 Facebook post reads.

Van Wagoner said he treated the two-year closure as “retirement training.”

“It feels sort of like coming out of retirement,” he said.
