Ashon and Leilani Norman have literally catered to the dining needs of avid fans of their cooking for years, and now an expanded version of their business has just opened.

Many throughout the Downriver area have seen Norman Cafe dishes at catered events and festivals, but now there is a permanent location to get those sought after meals and treats right inside the Romulus Athletic Center, located at 35765 North Line Road.

It officially opened for business on May 19.

The cafe has been a catering business for the past seven years now.

While they are known for their more hearty signature dishes, such as homemade baked and fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread, a variety of other theme-oriented quick meals, such as walking tacos and jammed packed, piled high supreme nachos are also favorites.

“Our southwest package and our soul food dishes are our most popular,” Leilani Norman said.

The cafe will have breakfast delights, protein shakes and a variety of “fun foods” and healthier snacks.

There also will be weekly specials and a variety of meals that Leilani Norman said will definitely “keep the athletic center in business.”

Ashon Norman, a 25-year chef, prepares all of the foods.

Both owners are excited to present their business in a different way to customers.

Leilani Norman said they have been able to hire a solid number of staff and realizes that this venture is going to be “a different animal” than what they have been used to.

It’s a challenge they are looking forward to as word is just starting to spread on their opening.

A lot of their efforts have not gone into spreading the word on the opening, but the owners believe the news is about to spread like wildfire.

“I couldn’t come in here without people saying, ‘When are you opening,’’’ Leilani Norman said.

Once they get settled in, the owners  hope to get more involved in community events and even offer scholarships to high school students.

Many already know the business from their participation in the annual Romulus Pumpkin Festival.

Once the decision was made to open a brick and mortar cafe, Leilani Norman said there were options on the table in terms of the location of the business.

Nevertheless, the love for this city runs deep for these owners, who are also residents of Romulus.

“We love our community and being here for one another,” Leilani Norman said. “Romulus is where our hearts are.”
