A new pizza restaurant is coming to downtown San Francisco. Local cafe chain The Grove is opening a New York-style pizza joint called Empire Pizza, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
Empire Pizza will be located at 688 Mission St. — the former downtown San Francisco Pizzeria Delfina space, which also happens to be right next door to The Grove's Yerba Buena location. The Grove co-owner Kenneth Zankel told the SF Business Times that Empire Pizza was inspired by the pizza he grew up eating in New York City, with "Empire" referring to the Empire State Building.
"The atmosphere is going to be old school with some New York edge and grit," he told the Business Times.
To bring his Neapolitan pizza dreams to life, Zankel and co-owner Anna Zankel hired former Pizzeria Delfina chef Brandon Wells. In December 2021, the owners of Delfina and Pizzeria Delfina announced they would be merging the two restaurants on 18th Street in the Mission District as a way to "streamline."
Meanwhile, The Grove, which opened its first location in 1999, had to close two of its cafes over the course of the pandemic (one on Hayes Street and the other on Fillmore Street). Currently, the Zankels are still operating the Yerba Buena cafe, the Design District cafe and plan to open a new "Grove To-Go" space next door to the upcoming Empire Pizza in the next few weeks.
Empire Pizza's projected opening for takeout-only is in June, followed by full indoor dining opening in August.
