Lim's Cafe in Redding is set to close after almost 90 years - SFGATE

A longstanding family-run restaurant in Redding is preparing to shutter after nearly 90 years of serving fluffy pancakes with a side of egg rolls.

Lim’s Cafe, at 592 North Market St. in Redding, is closing its doors after its sibling owners sold the building to local restaurateurs Jeff Garrett and Lon Tatom, as reported by the Record Searchlight. Lim’s Cafe’s final service day is Sept. 6.

Jeannie Lim, who co-owns Lim’s Cafe with her brother and two sisters, told the Record Searchlight that the ending of Lim’s Cafe wasn’t an easy choice to make, sharing that it was her father Peter Lim’s legacy. “He came from China when he was really young. It was one of those success stories,” Jeannie Lim said.

Another reason for the closure of the decades-old business is that the owners have reached retirement age, according to Ron Lim, Jeannie’s brother and part owner of Lim’s Cafe. He told KRCR that the closure was unfortunate but “it’s just time.”

Garrett and Tatom, who own Redding restaurants Jeff’s California Cattle Company and Lumberjacks, told the Record Searchlight that they plan to open another restaurant to replace Lim’s Cafe, though they did not clarify whether they anticipate opening a second Jeff’s California Cattle Company or another Lumberjacks restaurant, which has multiple stores across Northern California and one in Las Vegas.

“I think it’s a decent spot and I think another restaurant would do well there,” Garrett told the Record Searchlight.

Lim’s Cafe first opened in 1933 and changed locations twice before hitting on its current location on Market Street, which became its permanent home, in 1957. Throughout its tenure, the family restaurant has offered a no-fuss atmosphere with classic red booths and a mixed menu of Chinese and American dishes. There was an all-day breakfast menu filled with hefty portions of steak and eggs or omelets as well as Chinese comfort dishes like chow mein or cashew chicken stir-fry.

In the mid-1970s, Peter Lim informed his children that he planned to sell Lim’s Cafe unless they wanted to take over. Since then, Lim’s Cafe has been in the safe hands of Jeannie and Ron Lim for more than 40 years. Sisters Pat Lee and Bonnie Lim are also co-owners.

Among Lim Cafe’s most notable features has been its vintage neon sign that bears the business name and includes a giant red arrow that helped draw guests inside. According to KRCR, the neon sign will remain attached to the building for the new owners to use.

SFGATE reached out to Lim’s Cafe for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.
