There are certain meals that bring back old memories. One of those is a hamburger steak doused with A1 sauce. Growing up, it was considered a special meal at home and going back to dining at Doc’s Steakhouse, they were a common order for how affordable they were. It was a meal I’ve been craving for some time. I decided to swing by Red’s Cafe in Haysville, KS to feed my nostalgia.

Red’s Cafe is a restaurant I haven’t been to in over a decade. I dropped in over lunch and certainly glad I did. My meal started off with an unsweetened ice tea, but not just any dinky cup. It was a gigantic mug that also doubled as a workout for my left arm.
My hamburger steak came with a free side salad. Nothing special here; just a basic salad with a side of ranch.
The real treat came when my hamburger steak arrived with a roll, green beans, mashed potatoes with brown gravy (because brown gravy is the best) and a brand-new bottle of A1 sauce.
Listen, I get it, A1 isn’t anything fancy and it’s taboo when it comes to steak. But 1.) I didn’t want fancy, and 2.) It was a hamburger steak and 3.) I wanted the least bougie meal possible. This checked every box.
Everything was delicious and was exactly what I wanted. The brown gravy was perfectly paired with the (what I tasted like) boxed mashed potatoes. And I may have gone through an entire bottle of A1 dressing. This wasn’t a 5-star meal, but it was enough stars to make me happy.
And food aside, the service was fantastic. It had that true diner and small town feel.
Next time I return, I’m going to try their breakfast, as I’ve never had it before.
Here’s their menu:
Happy Dining,
Eddy
