Former mini-chain The Grove is down to one San Francisco outpost after it permanently closed its Design District restaurant, as first reported by the San Francisco Standard.
Owners Ken and Anna Zankel shared the news of the store closure on their business website and said that one of the leading reasons for the closure was a lack of foot traffic at the cafe at 1 Henry Adams St.
“We have always endeavored to create vibrant neighborhood gathering spaces in lively areas. And this was that! Until it wasn’t. This lovely, charming neighborhood currently has far fewer people than prior to the pandemic. We have fought valiantly to survive and outlast the moment,” the message read.
The Grove opened its Design District outpost in 2017. At the time, it was the fourth restaurant location in the mini-chain, which officially launched with a Chestnut Street storefront in 1999. Chestnut Street closed in 2013, but The Grove popped up throughout the city, with additional locations in Hayes Valley, Fillmore and Yerba Buena.
Eventually, those stores, except for Yerba Buena, would close their doors for good. The Chestnut Street location shuttered first in 2013 at the end of a lease term, but the Filmore and Hayes Valley locations closed later in 2020 due to a lack of financial aid amid the pandemic. The Design District and Yerba Buena restaurants eventually reopened for takeout and delivery service in May 2020 after a temporary closure.
“Alas, time has run out,” the owners said in their memo about the Design District store. “It was great while it lasted! Thank you for the magic moments and memories.”
The Zankels will continue to operate The Grove restaurant in Yerba Buena as well as their latest project, Empire Pizza, which opened in June.
