MANITOU BEACH, MI – Sandbar Café, Coffee & Creamery is a place where people can meet and find great bites.
The eatery has been around for a little more than four years in the Manitou Beach community. Owner Ann Coghlin is from Ohio and has a background in culinary school, and from working in the Ohio Air National Guard’s dining facility.
But, when son Matt accepted a scholarship to be a kicker on the Michigan State University football team, the family bought a cottage in the Irish Hills and fell in love with the state, Coghlin said.

Eventually, Coghlin decided to open her own restaurant, which was a leap of faith, but something she said she wanted to create for the Manitou Beach community.
“We just want to be that place in the community where people can get great food for a great price, and where people come in and are comfortable,” Coghlin said.
In order to be better connected with the community, Coghlin added different parts of it into the café. This includes an art wall, created by local elementary school students at a summer art camp, as well as local jewelry, candles and honey.
“It’s a reflection of our community,” Coghlin said.
While people often visit Sandbar Café to hangout, the food and coffee aren’t something to pass up. The restaurant takes pride in everything served, especially the quality of the food in a clean atmosphere, manager Bre Weidner said.
Breakfast is popular at Sandbar Café, including an egg sandwich on an English muffin, which can be made in a variety of ways. Rotating quiches, scones, muffins and other baked goods are also hits among customers.
When it comes to lunch, salads, sandwiches and home-made soup are offered, along with a variety of Ashby’s ice cream flavors. Coffee is also sold, including two specialty lattes, one being the Sandbar, which includes vanilla and caramel, and the other a “Lava latte,” with vanilla and lavender.
Meals-to-go also are available for order and pick-up.
Besides the food, the people make the café worth a stop, Coghlin said.
“The employees just have very outgoing personalities, they engage with our customers,” Coghlin said. “They are also very hard working.”
Sandbar Café, Coffee & Creamery, 135 Devils Lake Highway, is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. As it gets closer to winter, weekend hours will shorten.
More information can be found on the restaurant’s website and Facebook page.
