Next month, Spill’n the Beans, a popular Troy coffeehouse and bistro, would have celebrated its 19th year serving the Collar City. Instead, the popular downtown destination is preparing to close its doors.
Owner Rudy Bravo said the decision to close stems primarily from staffing shortages, adding that the effort to employ chefs and dishwashers has been a “rough ride.” He also attributed the closing to a difficult parking situation and pandemic-related heightened food costs.
“I’m going to miss all of my customers, I love them, and it was just a really hard decision to make. Troy is my second home," Bravo said.
The cafe made the announcement on its Facebook page, thanking the community for the outpouring of support over the past two decades. Customers flocked to the post, offering condolences, and expressing their love for the coffeehouse.
“My heart aches at the loss of a downtown anchor. The space may not be particularly large but the impact has been huge,” one user writes.
An additional challenge the coffeehouse experienced was the maintenance of the shop’s building, which is located on 13 3rd street in downtown Troy. Bravo said that the staff had experienced “intense temperatures” over the summer due to them being unable to reach an agreement with the landlord on the maintenance of the air conditioning unit.
Bravo emphasized that the closure, effective Oct. 31, is not a “goodbye, it’s just a see you later.” The business plans on continuing to participate in the Troy Riverfront Farmer’s Market and is in the process of rolling out an online ordering service for roasted coffee and beans.
The chef also said he hasn’t ruled out finding a smaller location to reopen at if there is any available, though, he added that he believes most of the area located close to the weekly farmer's market is filled. “I know that Daily Grind closed, so maybe I could talk with them,” he said.
From now until the end of the month, Spill’n the Beans will be operating with a modified menu and hours that can be viewed on their social media.
Another casualty
The bistro isn’t alone in closing shop after enduring the challenging landscape imposed by the pandemic. 333 Cafe in Delmar, located on Delaware Avenue, is also closed for good.
The coffeehouse’s website reads: “After surviving the Delaware Avenue road work and COVID, I have made the difficult decision to call it quits. We have made some great friends and it has made the decision that much harder. It is apparent that the ownership is going to be…problematic. We will look for something new. After 20 years…hard to say goodbye…so…till we meet again.”
No one from the business was available for comment.
