Patron Saint Café to open in Hingetown, serve coffee and aperitivos - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When Marie Artale was growing up in Westlake, she knew she wanted to own a restaurant someday. So, she earned a hospitality degree from Cornell University and went to New York City to work in the industry. In 2020, she moved back to Northeast Ohio with her goals in mind.

She will open Patron Saint Café, 2915 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland, in the upcoming weeks when inspections are done. A lifestyle café, it fills diners’ need for morning coffee, mid-day meal, remote workspace and afternoon/early evening cocktails. And it has views of Lake Erie, across the Shoreway.

Guests will find 10 seats at a white oak bar top, with an additional 35 in the main dining space.

The menu at Patron Saint is described as “Italian-inspired cafe dishes paired with espresso, spritzes, and warm hospitality.” The kitchen will be run by Chef David Kocab. Most items are vegetarian and/or vegan except the Lake Erie bass crudo and an interesting twist of pork-beef meatballs.

The cocktail menu is heavy on aperitivos. Perhaps the most well-known is the trending Aperol Spritz, something Artale first encountered when she studied in Florence.

Those travels and her Sicilian heritage inspired the restaurant’s Italian concept. The name came in her dreams. She simply woke in the middle of the night with the name Patron Saint. A veteran of 12 years of Catholic school, she was well-familiar with the simple idea that each person has a “patron saint” they can ask for help.

That has a symbolism she liked. She wants people to think of Patron Saint Café as a place to go for comfort ... be it for coffee, a light bite, workspace, an aperitivo or a hostess gift.

After searching Tremont, Lakewood and Ohio City for the right space she met Anne Hartnett who was about to buy The Vitrolite Building, in the near West Side Hingetown neighborhood.

Entering the building gave Artale goosebumps. That’s because she’d already had branding materials completed and they included arched shapes. The Vitrolite space had several arches as part of its exterior and interior design.

“It fit my Italian-inspired concept,” she says. As renovations progressed, Artale discovered mosaics under institutional green paint. She’s worked to preserve and restore the images. Those are now part of the interior charm.
