New York City-based Maman is opening its first Connecticut location in Greenwich on June 18. The bakery, coffee shop and cafe will be serving food including its nutty chocolate chip cookies — named one of Oprah’s favorite things in 2017 — at 98 Greenwich Ave.
The cafe will hold a grand opening event on the 18th, which is also Father’s Day. A press release says that co-owner Elisa Marshall will be there signing copies of “Maman: The Cookbook: Recipes to Warm Your Heart,” from 10 a.m. to noon, and dads can get a free s’mores cookie with purchase all day.
The cafe has not yet shared its Greenwich menu. Other outposts serve a wide variety of hot and cold coffee and tea drinks, cookies, a Nutella brownie, pastries, breakfast dishes and sandwiches. Vegan and gluten-free pastries are also available at Maman’s other locations.
The Greenwich spot will feature an event space and offer catering services.
Known for its rustic French aesthetic, Maman put out a call in its Instagram Stories for local artists to share their portfolios. The deadline to do so was June 12, and a winner will be selected to work with the brand to create a cup design exclusive to Greenwich.
According to its website Maman is owned by couple Elisa Marshall and Benjamin Sormonte, who met in Montreal. Marshall was working in public relations and wedding planning, and Sormonte was a corporate lawyer, but they decided to open a cafe together with the aim of making it feel homelike.
Its Instagram page states that the cafes are “laptop-free.”
The first Maman opened in New York City’s Soho neighborhood in 2014. The couple opened locations throughout the New York area, Toronto, Montreal, the Washington, D.C., area and the Philadelphia area.
Its Greenwich location is next door to Sweetgreen, in the space formerly occupied by Eleventy. Another coffee shop, CFCF Coffee, and a bakery, Bread Ventures, sit on the same block.
