Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Palm’s Café is in an Ann Arbor hotel, but it has comfort food for everyone - MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI -- It may be inside a hotel, but Palm’s Café in Ann Arbor is a spot where anyone can get a plate of comfort food.

Palm’s Café, tucked away inside the Wyndham Garden hotel, is what Executive Chef Rob Ross considers a “diamond in the rough.” He said the restaurant is often “overlooked” because of its location, but offers “something for everyone.”

Anyone can dine in for dinner whether they are a guest or not, Ross said.

Ross has spent the last year reinventing the cafe’s menu with a variety of dishes and weekly specials. The chef typically operates as a one-man show to create all kinds of homemade comfort foods.

“I’m just the guy that’s really passionate about food,” he said. “I don’t have a culinary arts degree, but I’ve been doing this forever and working in so many different restaurants, I want Ann Arbor to know that this restaurant is here.”

Ross gets “full creative control” when it comes to the restaurant’s menu, he said, adding this allows him to constantly experiment with new dishes and weekly specials.

The restaurant’s menu features appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, pasta, desserts and a handful of other entrees. Ross said customers can also find weekly specials with dishes like shepherd’s pie and meatloaf often making the list.

“I try to be choosy and just do comfort food that makes you feel good,” he said.

Some popular dishes include birria tacos, mac and cheese and a brisket sandwich made with brisket smoked in the restaurant’s outside smoker.

“I feel like we do our brisket a little differently than other places do in town, but I’m striving to have the best,” he said. “We smoke our (brisket) for five hours and get that smoke ring in there and get that wood taste, but it is tender and full of flavor.”

Ross said he ultimately hopes to “breathe new life” into the small restaurant in the Wyndham Garden hotel and bring quality with his creations. He said he prides himself on making as many dishes as he can from scratch.

“(Making dishes from scratch is) how I’ve been cooking my whole life. If you make good quality food, and you have good quality ingredients and put the effort in then people will come back,” he said.

Palm’s Café, inside the Wyndham Garden hotel at 2900 Jackson Ave, is open 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday for dinner services. Learn more online.
