Caffi'r Cyfnod on Bala's ever-bustling High Street is the oldest café in town. It's been running now for the best part of 80 years and by the looks of it, it's as popular as ever.
After all these years, it's still the best place to eat in town, according to Tripadvisor, and when you're there it's clear to see why it remains such an institution in the area. The setting is very low-key and isn't a million miles away from what you'd get at your local greasy spoon.
As I was looking through the menu at around 2:30pm, an elderly gentleman walked in and asked the waitress if they were still serving breakfast. Luckily for them, the menu includes an all-day breakfast section, and they all ordered a full English as they made their way to their table.
The menu is quite varied with an Italian slant overall. There's a breakfast and baps section as well as sandwiches, jacket potatoes and paninis. There's also a pizza and calzone section and a mains section including seafood dishes, steak, burgers and almost a dozen pasta dishes.

I opted for the minted Welsh lamb burger in the end, which like all lamb and beef dishes on the menu comes from a local Bala butchers. It didn't take long to arrive and when it did, I was happy with my choice - even though the all-day breakfasts on the next table looked good.
The minted lamb patty was delicious and reasonably priced at £13.50. There are tonnes of places that would serve a lower quality burger for an extra couple of pounds. The cheese and bacon on top sounded a bit strange on the menu but they went nicely with the burger overall, although perhaps a tzatziki might have been a better option.
The chips were fine, they were the frozen kind you get in cafes all over and were a bit bland, but they helped fill a hole. I always feel it's a bit of a shame when places don't just make their own chips as it's simple enough to do and really elevates the meal overall.
Nonetheless, it was a satisfying late lunch and I left with a full stomach. The menu is very reasonably priced and offers something for everyone. If you've just spent a few hours on Llyn Tegid or have been hiking in the area then it's the perfect spot to refuel.
The staff are friendly, the menu is a crowd pleaser and basically does what it says on the tin. There's a lot to be said about doing the basics right and that's what Caffi'r Cyfnod has been doing for decades - and long may it continue.
Prices:
Welsh minted lamb burger - £13.50
