Tyler Florence opening two cafes in San Francisco's Union Square - San Francisco Chronicle

San Francisco officials are hoping two cafes from one of the city’s most famous chefs in an iconic location will help revitalize downtown.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced celebrity chef Tyler Florence’s restaurant group, the Greater Organization, was selected to open two Miller & Lux Provisions cafes at Union Square. One location, at 225 Stockton St., will specialize in savory fare like spit-roasted chicken and all-day brunch. The other, at 350 Powell St., will serve coffee and pastries by Karla Marro, the pastry chef at Florence’s high-end steak house Miller & Lux. Florence, best known for his television career on the Food Network, also runs popular downtown restaurant Wayfare Tavern.

But before the Miller & Lux cafes can open, the plan still needs legislative approval. The Recreation and Park Commission’s Operations Committee will vote on the subject at its regular meeting Thursday. If approved, the full Recreation and Park Commission will vote on Sept. 21. If approved, the restaurants can open as early as October.

The commission, which manages the Union Square plaza, put out a call for bids to operate the two spaces in April, said Recreation and Park general manager Phil Ginsburg. Florence’s group was selected after a series of panel reviews. Going into the votes, he is optimistic about the outcome.

“Great food has always enlivened public spaces and food has certainly shaped San Francisco,” Ginsburg said. “The marriage between food and parks is a very happy one.”

The proposed leases for both spaces run three years, with an option for two extra three-year periods. Both have outdoor seating on the plaza, and the savory-leaning cafe will serve wine, beer and kombucha on tap.

The two cafes are among the city’s most recent efforts to revitalize the downtown area. In late August, the city announced its “Vacant to Vibrant” program, which will bring several three-month pop-ups into nine vacant Financial District spaces, with the possibility to extend if things go well. Food vendors slated to pop-up downtown include Devil’s Teeth Baking Company, a spot well-loved for breakfast sandwiches; Rosalind Bakery, a Pacifica outfit that makes top-tier sourdough; and Teranga, a Senegalese restaurant that served customers at the La Cocina food hall.
