Pie Queen Nicole Rucker Opens Fat + Flour Bakery and Cafe in Culver City - Eater LA

Prominent LA baker Nicole Rucker recently opened a second location that now brings her baked goods to the Westside. Fat + Flour first debuted as a stall at Downtown’s historic Grand Central Market in 2019, expanding to Culver City with new savory dishes, coffee, and indoor seating for 50.

The Culver City space is more of a cafe with wood tables and a wide display case showing off Rucker’s banana cream pies, brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and chocolate chess pie. The Westside menu includes savory scones and another prepared with blueberry and brown sugar, plus house-made granola, salads similar to ones Rucker made while baking at Gjelina Take Away, and panini made with focaccia expert Luca Quinn. Foccacia filings include kimchi and cheese, and broccolini with caramelized onion. Both are filled with gruyere and cheddar with add-ons like turkey.

Both DTLA and Culver City’s Fat + Flour prepare all goods on the premises, with an expanded menu of baked goods and other items in Culver City in the coming weeks. Caffeine drinks come with a small brownie square (or another treat) next to the coffee cup. Rucker also added a retail area with condiments, baking tools, coffee beans, and for this time of year, Christmas ornaments.

Though she’s in the middle of finishing her second cookbook, Rucker opened this cafe the week after Thanksgiving after signing the lease back in August. Those who reside in the neighborhood might recall the previous tenant Rumor Mill cafe was followed by a handful of short-lived juice bars. Rucker used to live in the neighborhood back in the 2000s.

“Some might say I manifested this location in 2006 when I used to hang out in this very cafe space while I did laundry next door,” says Rucker. “[Back then,] I emailed my former boss who owns a cafe in San Diego wishing there was a place like it here in LA,” she continues. “I even listed all the things I would change about the specific cafe should I ever have the chance. Nearly 20 years later, I signed the lease.”

Fat + Flour is at 11739 W Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90066, and is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
