Extended hours, simplified menu and dinner are coming to GG’s Cafe in Parma - MLive.com

PARMA, MI – Residents eating at GG’s Cafe in Parma may notice some changes coming to the restaurant this year.

The cafe has been open since 1975. Current co-owner Jennifer Poynter’s grandma Lana Putnam turned it into The Parma Café in 1985, and Poynter and her sister Jessica Crider took over in 2019 and renamed it GG’s Cafe, after their grandma’s nickname “Grandma Great.”

They’ve continued the traditions of the restaurant, while adding their own touches. However, this year Poynter decided to try and simplify the menu to benefit the customers and staff.

“It’s all going back to the roots and really simplifying, nurturing what we’re good at,” Poynter said.

So, you’ll now find simple, yet delicious, breakfast and lunch options at the cafe. The previous menu often became a “choice overload” for customers, Poynter said, adding the latest menu released in 2024 is less of that.

For instance, customers will see a simplified choice when it comes to pancakes. They can now just order the Pancake Breakfast, which comes with two pancakes, two eggs and a choice of breakfast meat. They can also add a third pancake, or “make it light” by just ordering one pancake, one egg and two slices of bacon.

“(Previously) it was broken down, by pancakes, then it was add eggs, add meat, add meat and eggs and it just was a lot,” Poynter said.

Other items have bee adjusted to give a nod to Poynter’s grandma, including changing the small breakfast option the “1X4,” to be called GG’s Breakfast. This comes with a small order of hashbrowns, one egg, a slice of toast and two pieces of bacon, rather than just one.

“I kind of morphed it into what GG always gets with that second piece of bacon instead, and still making it a light breakfast,” Poynter said.

Poynter hopes the simplified menu will allow her to step back from the kitchen and focus more on the baking side of the business. She bakes pastries, pies, cakes, layered desserts and other items for GG’s Cafe, other restaurants and local businesses, she said.

Other small changes include a brief history of the restaurant on the back of the menu, which Poynter said she hopes helps bring more attention to the restaurant. Other plans include extending hours to be open on Sunday and launching a website, she said.

GG’s Cafe has even started to rent out its kitchen to the Burnt Honey food truck to allow owner Brandon Rice to offer dinner options while GG’s Cafe is closed. This is available for dine-in or takeout from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Saturday.

“It’s something unique and I’m hoping that it turns into something more, working with food trucks and other local businesses to bring another dinner option to Parma without me being open and doing it,” Poynter said.

GG’s Cafe, 110 W. Main St. in Parma, is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
