The 4,500 square-foot Noblesville Bakery Café will be located at 13230 Harrell Parkway in a prominent location at the main entrance to Hamilton Town Center. The fast-casual bakery-café is known for its welcoming environment and its quality, fresh ingredients and quick service. As a bonus, guests will receive a complimentary freshly baked croissant with a soup or salad purchase and a delicious chocolate chip cookie with every kids’ meal purchase.

Southern Brands also owns the popular Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen, a bakery and ice cream shop with seven locations across Louisville and Elizabethtown, Kentucky and New Albany, Indiana.

Homemade Ice Cream & Bakery Café in Noblesville will be open seven days a week with items from their café menu currently available for lunch between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Their small batch ice cream and wide variety of baked treats are available for purchase throughout the day.

Gia Gelato + Cafe: A Sweet Taste of Argentina in Jersey City - hobokengirl.com

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Gia Gelato & Cafe has been a staple in the Jersey City community for years providing delectable gelato while also being a hub for local artists to showcase their work. What you may not know is that the popular eatery is under new ownership as of early 2021. Allow us to introduce you to Soledad Riquelme, Gia Gelato’s chef and owner from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Located at 281 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, Gia Gelato & Cafe is not your average gelato shop. Keep reading to find out why Gia Gelato is JC’s go-to spot for a sweet Argentinian treat.

Meet the Owners

Soledad and her husband Axel always dreamed of coming to the U.S. and opening their own business. The Argentinian immigrants gained ownership of the beloved gelato shop in early 2021 and everything fell into place after that.

“When we came to America about 20 years ago, we came to Jersey City for work and we fell in love with the area and the atmosphere,” Axel said. “We were customers of Gia Gelato before we bought it. Our daughter went to school around the corner and we always said how wonderful it would be to have a place like this for ourselves. Then someone told us Gia Gelato was for sale.”

Since taking over, Soledad has brought an Argentinian touch to Gia Gelato while also ensuring that the cafe stays true to what the original spot represented. They currently have no plans on changing the name.

“We’ve maintained a lot of the essence of the original shop,” Soledad said. “We’re incorporating more Argentinian dishes in the menu including Argentinian empanadas, desserts like dulce de leche, and more so that people can be introduced to our culture. This is another reason why we introduced the Tango lessons, and little by little we’re forming a mixture of cultures, of what already was here in the community and our roots.”

Soledad and her family lived in JC for many years and now reside in Bayonne. Apart from working at Gia, Axel has worked in the IT and finance world for over 25 years, while Soledad runs Gia Gelato full-time. Soledad and her husband previously had a business in Union City called El Ombu (which is the national tree of Argentina) where they sold Argentinian empanadas but COVID-19 forced them to close it down before Gia Gelato was up for sale. Instead of reopening El Ombu, they took a chance on the gelato shop.

Outside of the cafe, Soledad and her family enjoy spending time outdoors together. Soledad is an entrepreneur who loves animals and enjoys knitting, making soaps, candles, and crocheting.

The Vibe

The ambiance at Gia’s is inviting, vibrant, cozy, and colorful with their signature orange lettering and floral painting on the front of the building. Gia Gelato is a valued haven of the arts in JC. When you stop by, you’ll usually find beautiful artwork created by local artists and the cafe takes part in the annual Jersey City Art and Studio Tour. Stop by the cafe for performances by musician Nety Reis, free drawing sessions hosted by Guaicora Studios, and Tango lessons on Thursdays led by musician, artist, and instructor Reinaldo Perez.

“In addition to the continuous rotation of artwork, our goal is to host at least one special event per week,” Soledad said.

The tango instructor, Reinaldo Perez, is part of the same artist community that frequently hosts art exhibitions at Gia, and this is how the idea for Tango lessons began. Soledad plans on hosting the classes long-term.

What makes Gia Gelato uniquely special to JC is Soledad’s love for the community.

“All of us at Gia Gelato, Bel, Ricardo, Axel, and I love the integration with the community, the closeness to the neighbors and our customers,” Soledad said. “We like to think that the feeling is mutual and we create a space where you can feel as if it is ‘your place’ too.”

The Menu

From breakfast sandwiches, smoothies, to the delicious signature gelato, Gia Gelato’s menu offers an eclectic selection for every kind of craving.

HG Tip: The mac and cheese is a must-try!

The types of gelato used at Gia are made with imported Italian ingredients like Amarena cherries, pistachios, and hazelnuts. According to Soledad, the best-selling flavor is the Dulce de Leche. The Hoboken Girl stopped by Gia and tried the classic chocolate and it was out of this world.

Soledad’s favorite gelato is the Amarena cherry, while Axel raves about the gianduia, which includes chocolate and hazelnuts.

The word Amarena means sour cherry in Italian, and the gelato flavor is made with cream and black cherries specifically from Emilia-Romagna. The gianduia, or gianduja, was invented in the city of Turin, Italy.

Aside from the gelato, the cafe’s empanadas are incredibly tasty and are hand-made and baked Argentinian-style. The Cuban sandwich is also a popular item.

The Future

Soledad plans on expanding the menu and bringing diverse flavors and specialty drinks to the cafe. When asked about opening a new location, Soledad says it is a very real possibility but before they begin that endeavor, they hope that Gia becomes a reference point when people visit Jersey City.

Flavor of the Week: Lanza's Cafe - Chapelboro.com

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Catherine Coley and Christina Vad loved frequenting the Honeysuckle Cafe & Bar in downtown Carrboro – but they never expected it would lead to owning their own cafe in the very same spot four years later.

But sure enough, the coworkers and friends moved forward to open Lanza’s Cafe on Main Street in August 2021. The cafe is named in honor of Vad’s late father, whom she cared for while simultaneously working at her former job. Vad’s father owned his own restaurant and bar in Upstate New York for 40 years.

Prior to purchasing the cafe, the two envisioned a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals taking care of loved ones while still working.

“To be any professional, having to take care of anyone really, but having to take care of a loved one that is sick requires mental, physical, and monetary dedication,” Coley said. “I don’t know how people would do that if they didn’t have the luxuries that we had at that time to be able to care for him, so that’s kind of where the nonprofit idea came from.”

While they don’t have an exact plan yet, the co-owners hope to connect this cafe to their original nonprofit vision.

“When we found out that the cafe was potentially for sale and reached out, we said, ‘Man, we could really use that as a jumping off point,’” Coley said.

Those who knew The Honeysuckle’s menu won’t be disappointed by Lanza’s similar range of offerings: the business is offering drinks ranging from coffee and tea to beer and wine. For food, the cafe has a menu filled with small bites, local pastries, smoothies and treats.

Lanza’s Cafe is keeping these products local. The cafe still has a taste of The Honeysuckle Tea House on their menu, offering some of its teas and meads. Pastries are sourced from Ninth Street Bakery in Durham, and other products on the menu are primarily sourced from local businesses.

Coley and Vad are also working to expand the cafe to offer a full lunch and dinner menu.

“We’re hoping to have flatbread pizzas and homemade raviolis, and we can’t do that right now with the space that we have,” Vad said. “But we’ve been working with engineers and things to expand.”

The two hope to have a full kitchen offered by the summer. Right now, the two are ensuring the cafe serves as a hub for community connection.

“We thought it could be a really good place to just bring the community and people together; a platform just to share in what we like to do, and we just really enjoy making people happy, coming together, and having good discussions,” Vad said.

To encourage this, the cafe hosts events multiple nights a week, including Chess Wednesdays, Trivia Night Thursdays, and multiple other weekly and seasonal gatherings.

To visit Lanza’s cafe, head to 601 W Main Street in Carrboro. You can also keep up with the cafe on Instagram. The website is coming soon.

'Family' of employees and customers rallies to save a beloved Utah diner - Salt Lake Tribune

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

At Janet’s Sunshine Cafe in North Salt Lake, the owner’s name is on the logo, but she hasn’t been in her usual perch of the last 16 years — the kitchen — for a few weeks.

Janet Barmore was hospitalized in January, her staff said. The cafe’s 13 employees have banded together to keep the cafe going as before — serving bacon, eggs, omelettes, and the cafe’s popular whole-wheat granola “magic pancakes” — while she recuperates. (Out of respect for Barmore’s privacy, the employees aren’t giving details about her health problem, except that it’s not related to COVID-19.)

“Everyone works really well together, and we try to help each other out. … Everyone’s on board to make it work,” said Katie Tucker, a former customer who’s been a server at the cafe for the last three years. “One of the most common things customers say is, ‘Are you guys all family?’ We always laugh and say, ‘Kinda, but not really.’”

That “family” of employees and customers has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for help Barmore through what is likely to be a long recovery. They set a goal of $20,000, and after two weeks (as of Tuesday), the campaign has raised $10,880 in pledges.

The cafe’s core staff includes Tucker; host/cashier Shelby Tugaw, who’s worked there for three years; server Lisa Adamson, who’s been here for 16; and Brittanie Hartwell, who has cooked elbow-to-elbow with Barmore for eight years.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Raquel Brady serves food at The Sunshine Cafe, in North Salt Lake, on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022.

Hartwell said she’s become “an interim Janet, which are big shoes to fill because there’s so much she’s always had control of, and done everything.”

To give Hartwell a break, one much-needed day off each week, the cafe has cut its Saturday hours while Barmore is out. Most days, Hartwell arrives between 4:30 and 5 a.m. to prep the ingredients she’ll need throughout the day, as she makes breakfast items, burgers, soups, salads and dressings — all from scratch.

The doors open at 7 a.m. and, Tucker said, “we’re pretty busy right off the bat. … We serve about 150 to 170 people a day, and on the weekends, we serve between 250 to 280. Our little cafe only seats 37 people, so we’re working really hard and really fast to get people in and fed and well taken of, and then get them on their way.”

On average, Tucker said, about half of the diner’s customers are regulars, people who have been eating there for the last 16 years — 17 in May. They definitely come for the food, but beyond that, they feel a deep connection to Barmore.

Barmore never wanted to do anything but open a cafe. At 15, she got her first job at a bowling alley in Bountiful, but her favorite place was the coffee shop — and she decided her dream was to open a little mom-and-pop comfort food diner.

In 2005, she bought the Sunshine Cafe, at 20 S. Orchard Drive, in North Salt Lake. “The name was already on the sign when she bought it,” Adamson said, “and she didn’t want to replace the sign, so she just added ‘Janet’s’ to [the name]. She would love to fly all over the world, but she doesn’t have time, and she loves airplanes, so she added that to the logo.”

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) A Cinnamon Granola Pancake, at The Sunshine Cafe, in North Salt Lake, on Friday, Feb. 4, 2022.

Hartwell prepares the dishes for which Sunshine is known, including biscuits-and-gravy and peanut butter squares, she can’t do everything Barmore usually does — like going out to the outdoor charcoal grill, no matter the weather, to barbecue tri-tip steaks for Friday’s special.

“If she wasn’t doing something in the cafe, she was doing something at home for the cafe,” Tucker said. With what they think will be a long recuperation, Tucker added, “our goal is to keep the cafe up and functioning.”

That includes making sure customers feel they can still connect with Barmore.

“We have a big, huge card that we got for Janet for people to sign,” Tucker said. “We had to go get extra pieces of paper, because we were just out of room. Our customers just want to do whatever they can for her, which is really cool.”
