The owners of DeSales Cafe in Walnut Hills were preparing to reopen outdoor dining when the unexpected happened: a rock was thrown at their front window.
Sandy Vierling, the owner of DeSales Cafe, said someone threw a large rock through the window as they were walking past the cafe on Thursday afternoon. She was shocked that someone would do that in broad daylight.
"It set us back, unfortunately," Vierling told the Enquirer on Sunday. "It's heartbreaking because it's already been a struggle to reopen. We were making a good comeback. It was almost perfect and now we're starting over again. We'll be okay."
John Vierling, the manager and Sandy's husband, was out front setting up tables ahead of Friday's reopening of outdoor dining when the incident occurred. The couple initially thought the rock was thrown from a vehicle.
She said the East Walnut Hills community has been supportive.
"This neighborhood (East Walnut Hills) is just amazing and really waking up," she said. "People here are proud to have this cafe and have been supportive."
Vierling said a police report was filed and that the cafe is giving police footage from the incident. DeSales Cafe will close for a few days this week to clean the place, she said.
The owners have faced similar situations before.
In 2014, three teenage boys were accused of robbing the Vierlings' market at gunpoint while wearing Halloween masks. John Vierling, who had a gun pointed at his head, was in disbelief.
Police eventually arrested the suspects at Kenwood Towne Center after they made some purchases using a customer's credit card.
