Lucky’s Cafe in Cleveland to be featured on ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’ takeout special - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tremont dining staple Lucky’s Cafe will appear on Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 22.

The show, hosted by Food Network icon Guy Fieri, looks a little different in the time of the coronavirus pandemic. Fieri has focused on takeout and delivery options around the country, and has been taping the show at his home with the help of conferencing apps to communicate between chefs.

This isn’t the first time that Lucky’s Cafe has been featured on the show; back in 2009, the restaurant appeared in the show’s seventh season on the episode “Barbequed, Baked, and Brined."

Chef and restaurant owner Heather Haviland said that Lucky’s is set to be featured in a special 10-year anniversary retrospective that will air later this summer. In the meantime, she was recently called up for the takeout special episode.

“They were calling me for this episode, and they said Guy picked out his old-school favorites, or something like that, and he had a specific list of people he wanted on the show that he wanted to do and focus on takeout,” Haviland said. "He knew a lot of the restaurants he was picking weren’t actually even open at the time, but hoped that by the time it aired, they would be open. We just happened to be one of those places that was open.”

The show was filmed with social distancing in effect. Haviland and her crew filmed her portion, and she said that Fieri’s family helped with makeup and camera work, filming in his kitchen.

“He has this beautiful kitchen. I’ve been to his house for his birthday before, and I’ve worked in his kitchen there, which is unbelievably beautiful,” Haviland said.

The premise of the episode, which is titled “Funky Finds in 'da House,” is that a few chefs teach Fieri how to create signature dishes from their restaurants through a Zoom conference call. Haviland created her baked mac and cheese with bacon.

At the end of the show, the chefs decide who made it best.

Though Haviland couldn’t spoil details around the show, she hinted that it incorporated a couple of surprises.

“In our episode specifically, we have some extra entertainment that other shows did not have. It’s a lot of fun," she said.

To celebrate Lucky’s appearance on the episode, the cafe will open for extended hours on Friday, May 22, serving up the same mac and cheese dish that Haviland created in the episode, along with applesauce and caramelized brownies. The special will be available until 5 p.m. on Friday.

“We are putting that all together so that when people watch the show, they can go online and order,” Haviland said. “They can eat like Guy ate.”
