CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va. – An organization on Chincoteague Island is still helping to feed people in need – even though their cafe doors are closed. Manna Cafe spent the day Monday packing and delivering lunches for 77 island residents who are home bound. The lunches included a sandwich, Manhattan clam chowder, fruit, and cookies.
Manna Cafe co-founder Bill Lytle says that the organization has been feeding people for years – but COVID-19 has increased the need. Lytle says seniors are more able to stay safe at home when Manna Cafe delivers to them. “The situation is interesting because they’re elderly and even though maybe a couple of them can out, they’re afraid to go to the store because they don’t want to be exposed. So the more elderly they are, the more likely they want to stay home,” he said.
Lytle tells 47ABC that Manna Cafe is always looking for more donations in order to keep serving their community. “We’re always accepting donations because Manna Cafe totally runs on donations. So the food we get from the food bank is certainly welcome, but if anybody wants to donate, they can go to our website,” said Lytle.
If you’d like to donate, you can visit their website.
