A Colleyville cafe is offering a ‘truly healthy’ alternative to traditional desserts - The Dallas Morning News

Dorothy Warda’s first introduction to the world of organic food was out of necessity. She began experimenting with an all-organic diet to help combat her daughter’s unexplained health issues.

It worked, Warda said, and her daughter’s symptoms dissipated.

Now, years after switching to an all-organic diet, Warda and her family decided to open a cafe offering organic desserts, along with coffees, teas and smoothies. DessertsRx Organic Café in Colleyville sells organic desserts free of gluten, dairy and refined sugar, readily available to the community.

“The truth is, people eat what is available to them,” Warda said, adding that she wanted to provide an accessible option for people who don’t want to eat GMOs.

The cafe opened in November, but Warda had been studying nutrition for years prior and became a certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. In fact, the entire family — Dorothy, her husband, Simon, their 18-year-old son, Alex, and 16-year-old Nina — became certified health coaches, she said.

DessertsRx Organic Café boasts a menu of desserts, but it also sells organic coffees, teas and smoothies.

All of the menu items are organic, plant-based and feature superfood ingredients, while desserts avoid gluten, dairy and refined sugar. The cafe does offer organic milks and syrups made with organic cane sugar for their coffees and teas.

“They are like truly, truly healthy,” Warda said. “They only look and taste like a dessert.”

Warda noted that Nina developed many of the recipes herself. Warda said her daughter had a “sweet tooth” and wanted to find a way to enjoy desserts without facing health issues.

Their trademarked “noCheeseCake” desserts come in jars, or in the shape of hearts or dots. They also sell chia and cream jars that feature a variety of flavors. Options range from vanilla, coffee, and matcha to fruit flavors of strawberry, blueberry, orange and lemon. The brightly hued desserts use only organic superfoods — no artificial colorings.

“They are nutritious enough for breakfast,” Warda said, “or they are delicious enough for dessert.”

The family’s next project is an upcoming “OutSmart Café," a Colleyville coffeehouse that will carry items from the DessertsRx line and their SaladsRx line, as well as coffee roasted in store, according to an Instagram announcement. They’ll also provide educational resources, Warda said, like printed and digital information on GMOs and food options.

OutSmart Café is scheduled to open this November, around the first anniversary of DessertsRx Organic Café.

Ultimately, Warda said, the goal is to provide people with information and opportunities to choose organic, healthy foods even when life is too busy to devote the extra time needed to eat healthfully.

“It’s all about raising awareness,” Warda said. “Not just talking about it, but giving people access to it.”

DessertsRx Organic Café is located at 8300 Precinct Line Road, Suite 104 in Colleyville. 817-966-6676.
