Here are some of the N.J. public schools not returning to classrooms until 2021 - NJ.com

No students in classrooms until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic would have seemed far-fetched not too long ago.

In recent weeks, though, a growing number of school districts have announced they are staying with, or switching to, all-remote learning until January — and possibly longer.

The list includes three of the state’s biggest school districts, in Jersey City, Newark and Paterson.

With coronavirus cases continuing to rise in New Jersey, the list seems likely to grow, though Gov. Phil Murphy has said he is not planning to order a statewide shutdown.

The K-12 Delran school district in Burlington County switched to all-remote learning at all four schools on Monday and plans to continue through Jan. 15.

In announcing the change Friday, Delran Superintendent Brian Brotschul said 525 students and district employees have had to quarantine since the hybrid schedule began in September, and that 14 COVID-19 cases had been reported in the past two weeks.

Brotschul told parents in a letter that “although our safety protocols have worked by not having any teachers infect a child or any child infect a teacher ... It has proved difficult to sustain an in-person program.”

He cited the difficulty of having “assumed the responsibility of managing community or family born cases as they become connected to our instructional program overall.”

“I wish conditions could have allowed for a full year in person program,” Brotschul wrote.

While the state does not maintain a public list of the schools or districts that have had to close down, it provides an online dashboard identifying counties, number of schools and cases that were transmitted in school buildings or through school activities.

As on Monday morning, it showed that 51 schools have had a total of 193 cases.

Below is a list of schools and districts not planning a return to in-person instruction until 2021.
