Eatbeat: Soups exceed expectations at North Side Cafe - Grand Forks Herald

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

In January, soup sells well at this large restaurant on the northwest corner of Grand Forks. At noon on Wednesday, the parking lot was almost full. People were finding their way to favorite spots inside the the North Side Cafe. There is seating along one side. There are tables way down the center and into a back area. Windows all around.

With her brother, Rick, and her sister, Becky, Laura Hanson operates the restaurant that is serving soup, including vegetable beef, chicken and dumpling in mid winter. It varies from day to day. Hot meat loaf and sandwiches are served along with hand-pattied burgers.

Then there is full breakfast fare and full dinners. Closing time is 8 p.m.

My stop for soup gave me a chance to warm up with a bowl of celery and carrot broth ($2.99). The soup had a nice flavor.

"We don't use any canned vegetables. We have used ham, often on Tuesdays," Laura Hanson said. "Then there are days for homemade tomato soup. Maybe turkey noodle. Or clam chowder."

The days start early at North Side Cafe. Customers these days wear masks. The servers and kitchen workers are also wearing masks. There's an orderly feeling throughout.

Creamy sausage and potato soups have been going well. Chicken dumpling is a year-round favorite with some customers stopping by to take out quarts. Laura Hanson said they brought the recipe from the former Del's coffee shop, which they operated for a time before it was closed.

While seating at North Side Cafe is listed as 160, it is operating at about 65%. There are two tables and four booths locked down for protection. Good, loyal help has made the difference, along with homemade soup, according to the owners. Laura Hanson said the Kegs, which the Hansons bought and are remodeling, will be open again in the spring or summer. The well-known old drive-in was closed the past summer for revamping.

The North Side Cafe with its large parking area has kept the Hansons busy. They take pride in making their patties for hamburgers.

"We patty our own," Laura Hanson said.

She remembers her first job in a restaurant. She worked behind the counter at Miller's grocery at 17th and South Washington Street. She thinks back to her younger days when she wanted a certain little sweater.

"My mother told me I would have to get a job," she said.
