Interested in the healthcare industry? Here's what you need to know - CU Boulder Today

Between working as a physician or nurse, or working in public health, there are many career paths in health professions. Whether you know what you want to do or you’re still figuring it out, it’s never too early to get started. Here are some steps to take if you’re interested in a career in health.

Explore health professions

During this time, work to build and maintain good study habits and time management skills. This will not only help you in your classes now, but also in life after CU Boulder. Review these study tips to help you jump-start your spring semester.

Gain experience and explore graduate school

In your second or third year, you’ll want to continue exploring and find ways to gain experience.

  • Continue research and explore healthcare careers.
  • Gain experience through clinical volunteering and job shadowing. Find opportunities through the VRC or Career Services, or you can ask family and friends.
  • Set up an informational interview with at least one person who works in a healthcare field of interest. This allows you to learn more about their work and the steps they took to get into their field.
  • Engage in service activities, either through student organizations or directly in the community.
  • Look into research opportunities depending on your interests. You can find these through internships or on-campus programs, such as the Biological Science Initiative.
  • Identify and work towards a certification for more hands-on experience, such as CNA or EMT.
  • Attend the Health Professions Virtual Fair Series on March 2-4. Meet local and national employers as well as professional school admissions representatives from many different healthcare fields.
  • Attend virtual information sessions hosted by professional schools and professional associations. Explore our calendar to find upcoming events this semester.
  • Engage with the health profession ambassadors through group advising.

Once you have determined the type of health field you want to pursue, begin exploring plans for graduate school.

  • Study for and take professional school exams
  • Make a list of professional schools to apply to and research their requirements
  • Begin identifying faculty to write you letters of recommendation.

The best time to apply is when you are a strong enough applicant to reach your goals. If you know that there are areas you could work on, like gaining more volunteer experience or improving your GPA, you may want to wait to apply. It's better to devote time, energy and other resources to strengthening your academic record, gaining health-related experience and becoming a stronger candidate rather than to jumping into the application process when you aren't at your strongest.

Finish strong

As you reach your final year at CU, pursue your health field of interest by working on plans for graduate school.

  • Study for and take professional school exams.
  • Finalize your list of schools to apply to and research their requirements.
  • Talk with faculty and others to write you letters of recommendation.
  • Prepare for and complete interviews.

Continue to work with career advisors through group advising on topics relevant to the application process. It can also help to attend virtual information sessions and the Health Professions Virtual Fair Series.

And remember, Career Services is here to help. Our team can support you early on in your process to the time you’re ready to apply. Get started with Career Services.
