EAST UKRAINIAN VILLAGE — Police are investigating the theft of an ATM and cash register from family-owned restaurant El Metro Café.
Around 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, three men wearing all black clothing and ski masks shattered the front door of the restaurant before taking an ATM machine and cash register, police spokeswoman Kellie Bartoli said. The men then drove away in a gray SUV, Bartoli said.
El Metro Café is the sister restaurant of Gaudi Café, 1147 W. Grand Ave. — also in West Town. Sisters Betty and Veronica Romo opened Gaudi Café in 2009 and later opened El Metro Café in 2014.
The restaurants are inspired by the culture of Mexico City, the hometown of the Romo sisters, according to El Metro Café’s website.
Detectives are investigating. Anyone with information, including video footage of the crime, should call 312-744-8263.
