Cafe Alto is opening in a portion of the former New Order Coffee space

A new cafe and coffee shop called Cafe Alto opens later this spring in the former New Order Coffee space in Brush Park. Cafe Alto, owned by real estate company @properties and coffee roastery CoffeeHaus, shares space with the real estate firm which built several offices at the location. Once open, Cafe Alto will roast its own beans with CoffeeHaus and sell pastries from White Wolf Patisserie and Canelle. The cafe’s own brand of bottled drinks is also in the works and could launch this summer, a representative tells Eater.

New Order Coffee closed its original location in Brush Park last June due to the economic hardships brought on by the pandemic. Its remaining location in Royal Oak closed in February, bringing an end to the cafe side of the business. New Order continues to sell its beans and other merchandise online.

Republic Tavern and Parks and Rec Diner are both permanently closed, a source associated with the restaurants confirms. Both closures are due to the financial strain and dining room shutdowns brought on by the pandemic over the last year. There are no plans to reopen. [ED]

Louisiana Creole Gumbo restaurant opens a location in Farmington Hills on Orchard Lake Road in mid-March, according to Detroit Metro Times. For now, owner Joe Spencer says the restaurant will only open for takeout. Dine-in service with seating for up to 30 people should begin once the health crisis begins to subside. Gumbo is the main dish at the five-decade-old Eastern Market restaurant. The eponymous dish is offered alongside sides and other dishes like red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese, and shrimp po’boys. With a second location on Seven Mile, the opening in Farmington Hills expands the Creole restaurant institution to the Detroit suburbs. [DMT]

Chef Kate Williams kicks off a dinner series exploring various aspects of Detroit’s culinary history on Friday, March 19. The five-course dinners take place at Williams’s restaurant Karl’s at the Siren Hotel on March 19 and 20, March 26 and 27, April 2 and 3, and April 9 and 10. The dinner series begins with dishes inspired by the year the chef’s Irish ancestors arrived in America in 1853, followed by years 1907, 1926, and 1946. Tickets are $120 per person and an additional $30 per person for cocktail pairings. In February, Williams permanently closed her other restaurant Lady of the House after four years in the Corktown neighborhood. “The pandemic has been ravaging small businesses for a year now and I think if this has shown us anything it’s that nothing is for certain,” she told Eater of the closure.
