Downtown Denver mainstay Mercury Cafe’s building for sale for $2 million - The Denver Post

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

The building housing downtown Denver restaurant and cultural hub the Mercury Cafe is for sale.

Located at the corner of 22nd and California streets in the city’s fast-changing Arapahoe Square area, the building has been listed on LoopNet for $2 million.

A summary of the property from brokerage Pinnacle Real Estate Advisors hints that it is a prime candidate for redevelopment and also implies that the Mercury Cafe, which has occupied the building since 1990, is either going out of business or seeking new ownership.

“The property enjoys favorable zoning, is located near light rail, and is within an area that is undergoing significant redevelopment,” the listing reads. “This is an excellent opportunity for a Mercury Cafe successor, other owner/user, investor or developer and the seller will entertain a variety of outcomes.”

The Mercury Cafe, founded in 1975, is known for its food but also eclectic offerings ranging from live music to hosting astrology clubs and Democratic Socialists of America meetings.

Last August, coming off COVID-19 lockdowns that had shut down its events and indoor dining, cafe owner Marilyn Megenity said that she was worried she would not be able to stay afloat in 2021.

“What will make the difference is the community support we’ve been given, which is awesome and humbling and incredible,” Megenity said at the time.

The LoopNet listing was shared on the r/Denver message board on Reddit.com Tuesday, prompting comments of support, nostalgia and mourning.

“(A) tiny, magical piece of Denver will die with that deed transfer,” Redditor BlackbeltJones wrote.

Megenity also took to social media on Tuesday posting on the Mercury Cafe Facebook page that business is “not going anywhere.”

“I’m looking for a group buyer that knows how to take care of a restaurant and loves and respects the culture that is the Mercury Cafe and will allow me to continue to be involved,” she wrote. “The Mercury is strong because of your love and support. I look forward to making more memories with you.”
