Gluten-Free Cafe Harlow Opened a New Location This Month
SE Hawthorne cafe Harlow — known for its vegan-friendly fare, juices, and gluten-free brunch — has opened a second location on NW 23rd, with its full slate of cheeseless mac-and-cheese, grain bowls, and smoothies. Jackie and Adam Sappington, known for their now-closed Montavilla staple the Country Cat, purchased Harlow and sibling Prasad back in 2018, and have been growing the brand slowly since then. The cafe, taking over a former Pizzicato, is now open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at 505 NW 23rd. [EaterWire]
The New-ish Known Associates Social Club Is Serving Birria Banh Mi
We completely missed the opening of Known Associates Social Club, a cocktail bar and restaurant in the former Keep space, and these days, it’s becoming quite the operation: Out of the speakeasy-esque space, co-owner Joe Frade is selling takeout orders of Vietnamese-meets-Mexican fare like tacos filled with luc lac, banh mi with a base of birria, and “phozole,” a beef stock made with traditional pho spices, topped with birria and hominy. The cocktail menu involves things like curry-leaf-infused Novo Fogo Cachaca, a margarita made with passionfruit and avocado, and an Old Fashioned made with “pho-fat-washed Scotch.” The bar is located at 615 SE Alder Street; order online for pickup here. A New Vegan Burger Spot Has Opened in the Former Sanborn’s Space
Oscar’s Burgers, newly open at 3200 SE Milwaukie, is specializing in Impossible burgers, with add-ons like vegan cheese and meat-free bacon. The sides are simple, sticking to sweet potato or shoestring fries, with an assortment of Blue Sky sodas to drink. Owner Charles Barker grew up in Portland, and recently opened the restaurant with his family after a long career working in the food industry.
