Downtown welcomes Kähvi Coffee + Cafe - Phoenix - Downtown Devil

A new, Tulum, Mexico inspired cafe, Kähvi Coffee + Cafe, has made its way onto Roosevelt Row.

Located in the monOrchid building on Roosevelt and Third street, the cafe welcomes patrons with warm colors, a bar and lounge area with couches, a back-drop with a projection of various photos or videos and an art gallery.

In just two months, with school back in session and many ASU students returning to in-person learning, the young cafe is seeing steady business.

Operating partner Samia Kohler said “I noticed a little bit of ASU traffic, hopefully, we can get more.”

Kohler mentioned that she would love to offer a loyalty card for students in the future.

The cafe provides not just coffee, but a unique atmosphere. Pastries, beer, and carefully selected wine and champagnes are just some of the food and drink items that the cafe offers.

Hope’s Artisan Bread, a local bakery, provides the cafe with pastries and simple sandwiches. Kohler mentioned they are moving into a more complete menu consisting of full sandwiches, salads, avocado toast and a menu with more lunch items, which will be coming out in the next week.

“It’s definitely a vibe here,” said first-time customer Amber Slopel.

“It’s nice hearing customers mention this is a unique space,” said employee Leslie Armento.

Aside from food and beverages, the cafe also has an art gallery with art pieces that are available for purchase, fitting in well with Roosevelt Row’s art-centric scene.

The gallery can also be converted into a special events area. Kohler said they recently held a wedding event there.

They also host yoga classes, typically occurring every Wednesday and Thursday. She hopes moving forward Kähvi can continue to host more types of events.

The pandemic brought uncertainty to many industries, especially new businesses.

“Right now, the food and beverage industry is going through a very hard time and it’s not just us,” said Kohler.

Like many other food and beverage places, Kähvi is looking for experienced people to work, but there has not been a strong outpouring of applicants.

“I feel like the vibe after COVID, a lot of people want to work from home, they don’t want to work in the kitchen anymore, or cafe or restaurant. It’s very, very hard just to receive an application.”

Kohler doesn’t want just anyone for their team, she wants to find people that fit their values.

“For me, I’m trying to build a very strong and happy team so I will spend time to find the right people,” Kohler said.

Armento added that “it’s nice seeing regulars come in and my co-workers are like a family.”

As the business continues to grow from its infancy, Kohler said she and the owners are very passionate about the concept that they’ve created with Kähvi Coffee + Cafe.
