ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - The applied studies program at Orange County High School is working on building community connections and job skills, right out of a café cart.
The Hornet Café cart brings smiles and breakfast to the Orange County school community every morning.
“We realized our students needed a more life skills-oriented program,” OCHS Special Education Teacher Shelley Dean said.
Students in program collect orders from people around their school each morning.
“We have a lot of freshmen on the cart, and when they come in they have a difficult time navigating the building,” Dean said. “We wanted to start them off as freshmen learning job skills and life skills so we can use it for math and reading.”
Kristen Day is one of those freshman. She says her favorite thing to serve is French toast.
Doing this is a highlight of her day: “It makes me feel special,” Kristen said.
Lal-Lay Bannister-Wells is another of the freshman on the cart.
“My favorite part is I like to hand out orders,” Lal-Lay said. “It’s just more fun.”
The students develop job and social skills. They even have a basketball and cheer team, the Hornet Heroes.
“We use this time to get to know them and their needs and their strengths,” Dean said. “It gives them a chance to meet other students. The kids in the hallways always talk to them and say hello.”
