MANITOWOC — The restaurant business has always been a bit of a community affair for Susan Reif, who owns Susie Kay’s Café in downtown Manitowoc.

So folks might not be surprised to learn her decision about when to retire is one Reif doesn’t intend to make on her own.

“Right now, I am thinking about retiring in December of 2024, but that’s not for sure,” said Reif, who has owned the popular diner, at 1110 Washington St., for about seven years. “It really depends on how me and my staff are feeling, and we will go as long as we can; it has to do with health issues.”

This homey restaurant serves up eggs, pancakes, French toast and more for breakfasts, and everything from burgers to cod baskets and perch plates for lunches and dinners.

Reif said people love the home-cooked feel of eating at Susie’s, noting fish often runs out on Fridays between eat-in diners and take-out customers. The restaurant also delivers meals and caters events.

Reif isn’t sure if she would sell the business when/if she retires next year. She rents the building and said she thinks her landlord has other ideas for the space.

“I suppose someone could move it to another location, but I’m not sure if that would happen,” Reif said.

Meanwhile, she will continue to use her resources to help Manitowoc residents who are struggling.

Susie’s will provide free turkey dinners to those who have no place to go on Thanksgiving or can’t afford a traditional turkey dinner. Last year, she served 280 people, and Reif expects to provide meals to at least that many again this year.

Volunteers help to serve and deliver meals. She also asks for financial donations or donations of frozen turkeys. The restaurant encourages reservations, so people aren’t waiting in line outside the door. She starts taking reservations the week of Thanksgiving.

New Manitowoc restaurant:Manitowoc will soon have a new restaurant in the former Casa di Amici site. Here's what to know.

She’s also supported anti-bullying and domestic violence operations, and served food at Roncalli High School’s Food Fair. Susie Kay's also gave away free sack meals during the coronavirus pandemic to help people struggling to make ends meet.

She said, “I just want to say, no matter when I and my staff decide to retire, that I appreciate my customers for all of the support and great memories they have given me over the years.”
