Sing is a new Hong Kong-style café that is opening in NYC - Time Out

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

New Yorkers familiar with Hong Kong culture likely know all about cha chaan tengs, the casual, cash-only diners found all over the Chinese region.

Given the wave of immigrants that have made their way to New York in recent years, it’s no surprise that the Hong Kong-style cafés are now opening on this side of the Atlantic as well, hoping to draw customers curious about their offerings.

Sing, a chain that was founded in 2020 and now boasts 16 locations in China, already operates an address at Tangram Mall in Flushing and, this week, it will debut a new storefront at 182 Bleecker Street by MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village.

In addition to cha chaan teng classics like slippery eggs over rice and unique pastas, the menu at Sing—led by the director of the culinary association of the Fujian province, Xiaoming Lin—will feature fun takes on the traditional, like a little bear milk tea and a pineapple bun burger.

You'll notice the menu to be relatively succinct compared to the pretty lengthy selections at other Asian restaurants.

According to an official press release, that’s all on purpose, catering “to a fast-paced urban lifestyle” and specifically “tailored for millennials and Gen Z.” For us, it makes it easier to basically try everything that’s on offer on-site.

The 1,200-square-foot space features a lot of neon-infused design elements that are certainly evocative of Hong Kong style preferences.

The address also boasts a bright, spacious, enclosed backyard that diners can make use of all year long. It’s unclear how the astronaut figures that are on display in the backyard play into this whole theme, but they’re certainly worth gazing at.

As for the logo: cats are popular symbols of good fortune and prosperity in Hong Kong culture, making the featured image a very smart choice indeed.

Just because they all look so visually striking, here's a selection of menu items on offer at Sing:

‘It’s Playtime’: Lego-inspired café to open in Northern Kentucky in December - FOX19

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

NEWPORT, Ky. (WXIX) - Children across the Tri-State will soon get to escape, build and play at Northern Kentucky’s newest business this weekend as opening day quickly approaches.

The Brickery Café & Play, the very first Lego-inspired café in the U.S., will officially open its doors on Friday inside Newport on the Levee’s The Gallery.

Cincinnati native and Lego aficionado, Daniel Johnson is the brains behind the eat-play concept - something that a lot of kids dream of. But Johnson has made one thing for certain: Legos are not just for kids.

Growing up, Johnson played with Legos often and it is a hobby he has not put down ever since he picked up his first block.

“Lego was the easiest and most satisfying way to feed that desire back then. As I got older, I realized that it’s not just a creative outlet for kids, but it appeals to adults as well,” he told Newport on the Levee.

Walking inside the store, people will be welcomed by kinetic Lego sculptures find three areas: A “kids play and discovery area,” the café where people can get light refreshments and snacks, and a retail space.

One of the other unique aspects of The Brickery is if you like what you build, you can purchase it and take it home.

While the kids’ play and discovery zone is for children ages 5-12, teens and adults will still have an immersive experience. Johnson says the store has future events planned for older children and adults, such as building tournaments or Sip & Brick classes.

The grand opening celebration will be held on Saturday, featuring special guest Paul Wellington, a contestant on this season’s Lego Masters. He will be at the store from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for photos and autographs.

Normal hours of operation for The Brickery are

  • Monday - Thursday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday - Saturday: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Sunday: Noon to 6 p.m.

Cafe 19 owners to open full-service restaurant in Brookville - dayton.com

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

The Englewood coffee shop, which opened in 2019, features French toast, omelets, biscuits and gravy, skillets, breakfast sandwiches and brunch items using locally sourced ingredients.

The owners always wanted to open a full-service restaurant, but decided to start off with a coffee shop because it was more feasible, Allen said. After falling in love with their coffee brand, the owners opened a second coffee shop in West Milton in July 2023.

The Brookville restaurant, unnamed at this time, will be located at 302 Market St.

“The Brookville location has a massive kitchen which is what we need for our baking,” Allen said.

Plans are to open for breakfast and lunch in the next two to three months and add dinner in the future. The new restaurant will have coffee, but the menu will not be as extensive as the Englewood and West Milton locations.

For more information and updates, visit Cafe 19′s Facebook page (@BreakfastCafe19).

New Wine Bar, Restaurant, and Neighborhood Cafe Rosella Opens in Mid-City New Orleans - Eater New Orleans

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Rosella, a new wine bar, cafe, and restaurant in Mid-City, has been open just a few days, but there’s already been a moment that’s made its existence feel like kismet, says co-owner Alixandra Petrovich.

It came as a result of the jukebox, says Petrovich, which she and her partner in life and business, Paul McCaige, bought from a local prop store that was going out of business. After getting it repaired and cleaned up by two local experts, they filled it with 45’s owned by Petrovich’s mom and aunt, who both grew up here in New Orleans. “The other day someone played ‘It’s Raining’ by Irma Thomas, and it was a moment that was just like, ‘This is perfect.’ The whole thing has been a real family affair, with our son and my mom being involved, it’s such a warm feeling.”

That warm feeling is central to Rosella, which is named for Petrovich’s grandmother. “Our plan was kind of backward. We didn’t have as much of a plan for the food as we did for a place,” she says. That plan was for somewhere locals in the neighborhood and beyond could come and congregate, relax, and enjoy good food and drinks, “with a touch of nostalgia,” Petrovich says. She grew up in the house next door and says a lot of her memories involve going to restaurants and running into people she knew. “I wanted to recreate that,” says Petrovich.

Boudin balls.
Smoked catfish dip.

That sense of familiarity can also be found on the menu, which Petrovich calls “a little bit comfort food, a little bit New Orleans, and kind of tongue in cheek.” For appetizers, there are dishes like smoked catfish dip, boudin balls, and shrimp remoulade lettuce wraps, but also an andouille corn dog, which started out as kind of a joke. Richard Horner, a former co-owner of the popular, now-closed Blue Giant, consulted on the menu. The trio joked about just serving “carny” food, and in typical Richard fashion, Petrovich says, he continued to take the joke “pretty far,” resulting in the corn dog. “It’s so delicious,” she says.

There’s also a chilled red bean salad, “the dark horse of the menu,” says Petrovich. Horner created it as a riff on red beans and rice, that creamy New Orleans staple, but in salad form and vegan. “It really does hit all the same notes somehow,” she says. There are a few other salads, like a cold fried chicken Waldorf salad, and a small menu of mains including loaded baked potato gnocchi, three cheese manicotti with spinach and artichoke, and meatloaf with a classic onion gravy, cauliflower puree, and green beans. “It’s all small, weird twists on these classics,” says Petrovich.

Chilled red bean salad.

That includes the dessert, a clever seizing of the Hubig’s Pies moment. The beloved, locally-produced hand pie returned about a year ago after a 10-year hiatus following a factory fire in 2012. The company has been rolling out flavors in succession since November 2022 to great excitement, with apple, lemon, chocolate, peach, and coconut currently available. Rosella is frying the confection for dessert — any of the flavors — and topping it with powdered sugar and vanilla Angelo Brocato gelato. The chocolate pie is Petrovich and McCaige’s son’s favorite, but Petrovich says apple goes best with the gelato. There will be sno-balls when it gets hot again, probably a mix of traditional and artisan flavors, and definitely a boozy option, served on the back patio (which is set to open soon).

Fried apple Hubig’s Pie with Angelo Brocato gelato.

As for the wine, the most important thing was to create an atmosphere that wasn’t pretentious or intimidating. “When you say wine bar, people can get a little overwhelmed,” says Petrovich. Rosella carries low-intervention, biodynamic wines, with a majority coming from smaller, female-owned vineyards. The list includes five wines by the glass or carafe (priced at $11 and $18, respectively) and another two dozen or so bottles, most of which are between $25 and $50. There are five house cocktails priced between $10 and $12, including the Purple Drank (named after the famed Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar daiquiri) with vodka, creme de Violette, and Luxardo; and the Mr. Tony, with Flor de Caña, lemon, Curaçao, orgeat, and orange bitters.

Rosella is Petrovich and McCaige’s first restaurant; the couple’s background is in the local film industry. Petrovich’s mom, who still lives next door to Rosella in the house Petrovich grew up in, owns the building. It was most recently home to Fullblast Brunch, and before that a Ruby Slipper. When the owner of Fullblast said he was ready to move on, it came at an opportune time for Petrovich and McCaige given the writers’ strike. “We went to the neighborhood and talked to people about what they needed,” says Petrovich. “Instead of another brunch place, it was a neighborhood cafe,” she says. They transformed the interior while avoiding much structural change — 20 years in the art departments of films has taught Petrovich that it doesn’t take a lot of major moves to make a lot of change.

They hired friends to sand the paint off the window trim, exposing the original wood, intricately painted the walls, changed out the light fixtures (which also came from the prop shop, along with the tables and chairs), covered the bar in pressed tin tiles, and changed out the bar top to marble. “We wanted it to feel like Morning Call,” the classic Mid-City beignet destination, says Petrovich of the bar. “That marble is old, and worn, and comforting.”

Petrovich says creating a positive space was the main motivation behind opening Rosella. “We were spurred by the writers’ strike but ultimately inspired by what we wanted to get out of it — emotional joy.”

Rosella, located at 139 S Cortez Street, is open Wednesday through Monday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Café Tropical in L.A. is closing its doors - Los Angeles Times

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

Café Tropical, which has been a staple in the Silver Lake community and served traditional Cuban cafecitos and pasteles for nearly 50 years, is closing.

News of the closure was confirmed by a handwritten note posted on one of the cafe’s windows. The note read, “Attn Cafe Tropical customers, we will be permanently closing our doors this week. Thank you for all the years and support you have shown us! Last day of service will be 12/01/2023.”

A handwritten sign

A handwritten sign at Café Tropical says the restaurant’s last day of service will be Dec. 1, 2023.

(Suzy Exposito)

The note was signed “Tropical Staff and Management.” De Los reached out to the cafe’s manager for comment, but he was unavailable to speak.

Located on Sunset Boulevard, Café Tropical was bought in 2019 by the owners of El Cochinito and Bolita. The cafe became part of the Cuban trio of businesses serving classic Cuban flavors to customers.

A similar sign announcing closure was also posted on the window of El Cochinito restaurant. All three locations are reported to be closed on Google but the businesses have not confirmed the closures on their social media accounts.

According to Bolita’s Instagram account, the bar recently reduced its operating hours.

El Cochinito, a Cuban restaurant that has also been a popular spot for its savory dishes and overall aesthetic, was popular among Silver Lake residents. With a similar style, Bolita is a Cuban-inspired cocktail bar.

Café Tropical’s menu is known for its medianoche sandwiches, guava cheese pastries and coffee.

At new CT cafe food is 'mostly seasoned with love.' And customers already love the location. - Hartford Courant

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

LaTasha Fitzwilliam says she cooks with simple ingredients at her new café, but her food tastes extra special because “it’s mostly seasoned with love.”

“I have a passion and love for this that I think is going to separate me from someone else,” she told the Courant. “Cooking with love is like you’re not cooking because you have to.”

Fitzwilliam, 34, recently fulfilled her dream of opening her own business, The Spot Cafe, 649 Burnside Ave., East Hartford.

The location was previously home to Rosa’s Cafe & Bakery, which announced it’s closure in August due to risings costs and personal reasons.

Fitzwilliam, once a grill cook at Rosa’s, serves breakfast and lunch at the new place. While the business is not a bakery as Rosa’s partly was, doughnuts are made there as well as the Latino pastries that Rosa’s made popular.

Fitzwilliam, who grew up cooking and watching Food Network, loves to see the smiles of satisfaction on customer’s faces when they take a bite of her breakfast burritos, home fries, popular Cuban sandwich or anything else.

“I love to hear the feedback and see the empty plates,” she said. “Every time I put something out there a little piece of me goes with it.”

Love is such a strong theme for her that the wall decoration includes an image of a coffee cup with steam in the shape of hearts coming off the top.

Fitzwilliam worked as a grill cook at Rosa’s in 2021 and later left for a higher paying job in the food industry. But she stressed Rosa’s owner Edna Cruz was a wonderful boss and person.

After leaving, Fitzwilliam, who lives five minutes from the cafe, would stop in occasionally to say hello, and grab a bite. When she visited in March, she learned from the family they were looking to sell.

Fitzwilliam tried everything she could to get a loan, but to no avail, until an aunt stepped up to help.

Now she’s living the dream – so dreamy that she still “can’t believe it.”

“I love it, everything about it. I don’t believe it.” Fitzwilliam said. “I don’t know when it’s all going to hit me.”

Fitzwilliam said she kept a lot of what Rosa’s had on the menu and added some items, such as pancakes, French toast and on Sundays only, waffles.

She kept the Rosa’s breakfast special, two eggs, choice of meat, home fries, toast, in honor of the family. Cruz said she named the cafe after her mother, Rosa, who helped anyone who needed a meal.

The lunch menu at The Spot Cafe includes Philly cheese steak, chicken Philly, tuna salad, chicken salad and The Cuban, a customer favorite sandwich.

One customer recently told Fitzwilliam hers were the best home fries they’d ever had.

“It made my day,” she said.

They also serve coffee, tea and Hosmer Mountain Soda.

The color scheme in The Spot Cafe is red, white, black, and grey, the first three colors a nod to Trinidad, from where her parents came.

Fitzwilliam said the cafe’s hours and proximity to home are perfect for her family life.

On Sundays she brings her daughter, 4, to work, as she can spend time with her and is one of the ways that demonstrates how the cafe is child and “family friendly.

“I want everybody to feel like we’re family when they come in,” she said.

Customers who weighed in on the new café in online reviews say the service is fast and the food is great. The Cuban sandwich is a fan favorite, as well as the desserts.

One reviewer wrote: “Best place in East Hartford for breakfast and lunch and wait to see what else is in store for this place.”

Another wrote: “Delicious Iced Coffee and the Cuban is my favorite… SO DELISH!”

Another summed her feelings up with, “Yummy.”

The cafe is open Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 7a.m. to 3p.m. and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.

Cups & Cats Café coming to Charleston in 2024 - WCHS

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

A warm and fuzzy business model is moving into the capital city, offering customers the opportunity to combine cuddles and coffee.

The Cups & Cats Café - located at 187 Summers Street - will serve as a foster home for furry friends and serve drinks along with food from local vendors.

"The cats are going to be sectioned off in their own little lounge area," owner Lora Reynolds explained. "They have their own separate space...so you can still see them even if you don't go in."

Aside from window shopping, the cat café plans to partner with the Charleston-Kanawha Humane Association and the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, a nonprofit organization that helps felines find forever homes.

"You can get coffee and go, or reserve a time to visit the cats," Reynolds added.

Reynolds said construction is underway and a target opening for the café is set for spring of 2024.

Cronk’s Cafe reopens its doors - KTIV Siouxland's News Channel

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

DENISON, Iowa (KTIV) - A restaurant that was a staple in Northwest Iowa for close to a century, Cronk’s Cafe reopened Monday after a years-long refresh process by the new owners.

It was an exciting day in Denison as the community gathered to enjoy a meal at a restaurant that served the community since 1929 but closed in May 2020.

“We were saddened when it took so long to get it back. But now very pleased that they were able to open it,” said Schleswig Iowa Native Joyce Miller.

One thing that is important for the new owners is keeping the name of Cronk’s Cafe in its historic tradition while keeping old menu favorites they also use their Hispanic heritage to add some new flavor to the menu

“We’ve already had a mix of orders, American orders and Hispanic orders, and everybody seems to be enjoying it so far,” said part-owner Omar Patino.

On the menu, you can find classic breakfast plates like eggs hashbrowns and bacon, cafe classics such as pork sandwiches, as well as burritos, chips and salsa and other Hispanic food.

“It’s a work in progress... it’s our first day but you know, we’re a team, we’re a family and we’re gonna do this together and make you know everything work,” said General Manager Guadalupe Hernandez.

With customers I talked to the reviews of the food were good and they look forward to coming back.

“I’m really impressed of the changes and the food is excellent and I’m really happy that they kept it the name Cronk’s here in Denison because every time I pass through here, this is what shows when you come down the highway,” said Customer Eileen Madrigal.

The restaurant was once a popular stopping point for presidential candidates campaigning in Iowa. On the wall, you can still see a newspaper article from when now President Joe Biden stopped by.

Cronk’s opened its bar at 4 p.m. Monday night. In the future, they hope to add pool tables and have entertainment such as bands and DJs.

The restaurant opens at 7 a.m. and has breakfast, lunch and dinner items with the whole menu being available all day.

Café Momentum to dish out hope for Denver teens exiting juvenile justice system - CBS News

takanadalagi.blogspot.com

A new restaurant is coming to Denver that will serve the community in more ways than one. Café Momentum is an award-winning nonprofit restaurant that employs youth exiting the juvenile justice system. Thanks in part to a one-million-dollar grant from The Denver Broncos Foundation, the restaurant will begin dishing out food and hope in the Mile High City next year.

Of the more than 400 restaurants in Denver, none are quite like Café Momentum. Those whipping up the food, setting tables, and serving guests are all teenagers with troubled pasts. Teens like Tristyn Williams, who was 15 years old when she was released from a juvenile detention center in Dallas in 2019.

"I had just come out of the juvenile system for a second time, and I was actually three months pregnant," she told CBS News Colorado.

Williams said she had little hope for her future until she learned about Café Momentum.

"I was so broken. I was scared," she said. "As a teen mom, and a young Black woman at that, it was already so much against me, and it was honestly a last-grab effort at trying to be able to get back on track."

Started by a chef in Dallas, Café Momentum provides a 12-month paid internship for local teens exiting juvenile facilities, hiring young men and women ages 15 to 19. Each intern experiences all aspects of a restaurant, including cooking, serving, hosting and even management.

"It's really this belief that young people deserve to dream, especially those that are coming out of the juvenile justice system," said Steph Frances, Momentum's national director of program and outcomes. "Our country and a lot of our systems are really not set up to support them well. So, generally, what happens in over 50% of cases, young people go back into the juvenile justice system, which is just devastating."

Since launching eight years ago, Frances said Momentum has seen more than 1,000 teenagers graduate from the program. Better yet, they don't go back into the system.

"We've had zero youths go back into this cycle of incarceration," she said.

Those are the results she wants to see continue when Café Momentum opens in Denver.

"Colorado ranks in the top third in number of youth incarcerations in the country," Frances explained. "And we have racial disparities. If you're a person of color, you're five to six times more likely to be incarcerated as a young person here, so there's absolutely a need."

Along with the paid internship, Momentum also provides numerous resources, Frances said, from 24/7 case management to free mental health therapy, even parenting classes. Interns are also required to be enrolled in school if they haven't graduated from high school yet. All of which were incredibly helpful for Williams.

"Most of the women in my family didn't finish high school," she said. "I graduated when I was 16 because of Café Momentum. I started making all these small accomplishments one by one and it just made me realize how much I had given up on myself. Going to Café Momentum and being around all these people that just automatically believed in me, filling me with all of this love and support, it helped me connect with my willingness to show my potential and grow that and act on it."

Now a 20-year-old mother of two, Williams is pursuing culinary school with hopes of opening her own catering business one day. A dream she didn't know was possible, she said, until she found a place that doesn't care about mistakes and wants to feed the future.

"Thinking about how my life could've gone if I wouldn't have found Café Momentum, it honestly breaks my heart," she said fighting back tears. "I almost burst into tears because I wouldn't have been able to provide for my son, and now my daughter."

It's not known yet where Café Momentum will be in Denver, but the goal is to open in 2024. The program could use more partners as well as donations. To learn more about Momentum and how to get involved, visit https://www.momentumadvisory.co/

Long-vacant Milwaukee building to be redeveloped as apartments, café - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

A long-vacant building on Milwaukee's near west side is to be restored with upper-floor apartments and street-level commercial space.

A commercial building on Milwaukee's near west side − vacant for more than 20 years − could be redeveloped into apartments and a café under a new plan.

The four-story, 10,064-square-foot building, 2627 W. State St., would be renovated into six apartments, with two to three bedrooms, as well as the café and a possible fitness center.

That's according to a new report to the Milwaukee County Board. The board is to review plans to seek a $250,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. to help finance the project.

The report said the $1.1 million project's other funding would include equity financing, loans, a city grant and help from Brew City Match, which provides grants, loans and technical assistance for Milwaukee central city entrepreneurs. No county funding would be involved.

The WEDC grant would be obtained on behalf of the property owner and developer, Watersview Investments Group LLC. The group, led by Jason Waters, bought the building in 2020 for $45,000, according to city assessment records.

The renovations would likely start by early 2024 with anticipated completion by mid-2024, Waters told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The building, which now has eight apartments and two commercial spaces, "has been vacant for over two decades and is currently non-functioning due to major rehabilitation efforts needed to make it habitable," the report said.

"The building’s location near busy 27th Street and close to many residential units, local businesses, Marquette University, downtown Milwaukee, freeway access, and a soon-to-be-renovated theater make it an ideal fit for additional residential and commercial use," said the report from Celia Benton, county economic development director.

The building is just across the street from the future home of Dulaney's restaurant, which is being developed in a former tavern at 2610 W. State St.

Dulaney's is part of a larger development that includes restoring a former theater, 2612-2616 W. State St., into the New State Theater, an all-ages performance venue, as well as recording studios.
