DENISON, Iowa (KTIV) - A restaurant that was a staple in Northwest Iowa for close to a century, Cronk’s Cafe reopened Monday after a years-long refresh process by the new owners.

It was an exciting day in Denison as the community gathered to enjoy a meal at a restaurant that served the community since 1929 but closed in May 2020.

“We were saddened when it took so long to get it back. But now very pleased that they were able to open it,” said Schleswig Iowa Native Joyce Miller.

One thing that is important for the new owners is keeping the name of Cronk’s Cafe in its historic tradition while keeping old menu favorites they also use their Hispanic heritage to add some new flavor to the menu

“We’ve already had a mix of orders, American orders and Hispanic orders, and everybody seems to be enjoying it so far,” said part-owner Omar Patino.

On the menu, you can find classic breakfast plates like eggs hashbrowns and bacon, cafe classics such as pork sandwiches, as well as burritos, chips and salsa and other Hispanic food.

“It’s a work in progress... it’s our first day but you know, we’re a team, we’re a family and we’re gonna do this together and make you know everything work,” said General Manager Guadalupe Hernandez.

With customers I talked to the reviews of the food were good and they look forward to coming back.

“I’m really impressed of the changes and the food is excellent and I’m really happy that they kept it the name Cronk’s here in Denison because every time I pass through here, this is what shows when you come down the highway,” said Customer Eileen Madrigal.

The restaurant was once a popular stopping point for presidential candidates campaigning in Iowa. On the wall, you can still see a newspaper article from when now President Joe Biden stopped by.

Cronk’s opened its bar at 4 p.m. Monday night. In the future, they hope to add pool tables and have entertainment such as bands and DJs.

The restaurant opens at 7 a.m. and has breakfast, lunch and dinner items with the whole menu being available all day.
