After a fire forced out this Vancouver cafe, a nearby restaurant took them in - CBC.ca

When a devastating fire in Vancouver's Kerrisdale neighbourhood last month forced Honolulu Coffee to shutter temporarily, a neighbouring restaurant stepped up to offer a helping hand.

The popular Hawaiian-themed café is now a pop-up thanks to an assist from Jess' Restaurant, a high-end Korean restaurant a few doors down the street.

Honolulu Coffee owner Ming Yang said the move has helped keep her business afloat, her staff on payroll, and her customers happy.

"We have a team of around 10 baristas and I wanted to support their living and we have been able to do that," she told On The Coast host Amy Bell.

Since mid-October, Honolulu Coffee has been operating out of Jess' everyday from 9 a.m until 4 p.m.

A massive fire broke out on the night of Oct. 1, gutting five businesses and four residential units in the Kerrisdale neighbourhood.

"The fire didn't reach us but our basement is full of water and our power room is completely damaged," Yang said.

Featured VideoAfter a fire forced Honolulu Coffee to close their doors, Jess’ Restaurant opened their doors to let them run a pop-up shop there. Ming Yang, the owner of Honolulu Coffee, and Winson Ho, the general manager of Jess’ Restaurant, sit down with Amy Bell to talk about their decision and the community's reaction.

Renovation is set to begin next week, said the café owner, but it is uncertain how long the construction work is going to take.

"It has been great to support the local business here," Jess' General Manager Winson Ho said on On The Coast.

Ho said the decision has made him open to considering future partnerships with local businesses.

"I am happy to offer up space to others who are looking for renovations and don't want to shut down for a long time," he said, adding the collaboration with Honolulu has helped both businesses.

"People at our restaurant who saw the pop-up café say they never tried Hawaiian latte before and go try it out and Honolulu customers who didn't know about us become open to try our food," he said.

Honolulu Coffee will operate as a pop-up at Jess' until the end of November.

"Our customers and staff often ask when we are going back home but we are working hard to reopen our original location and hopefully it happens soon," said Yang.
