What is Sanrio?
Sanrio is a Japanese entertainment company founded by Shintaro Tsuji in 1960. The word Sanrio is derived from the Spanish words san which means saint and the word rio which means river.
The company designs a multitude of characters and produces a wide range of products from stationary, clothing, gifts, accessories and more. The products focus on the kawaii or cute segment of Japanese popular culture. Of all the Sanrio characters, Hello Kitty is the most popular.
The company's business model centers around it's "everyone getting along together” philosophy. With it's characters and products, the company aims to spread messages and feelings of unification, love and happiness.
"With this in mind, Sanrio was established with the desire to build a peaceful culture on the riverbanks, where it’s said that humans first began to make homes for themselves. The hope was to create a community of people who could live in harmony and with consideration for each other," said Tsuji in a message to the company's website.
"By providing a variety of social, communication and gift products, including greeting cards, music, videos, books, and live entertainment to foster friendship, we hope to expand the circle of friendship and goodwill to every corner of the globe like the water that flows through the world’s rivers."
