Coffee, pastries and cat cuddles are available starting Wednesday, Nov. 1, inside a business along Ind. 46 in Ellettsville.
A love for cats led Amber Moore and her daughter Karrah Moore to open Btown Meow Cat Cafe to help lessen the overpopulation of cats without families in the Bloomington area.
Inside the cafe at 5015 Ind. 46, there are seats for eight people, a counter to purchase coffee, tea, muffins, cookies and other goodies and a chance to sign up for a 30- or 60-minute visit in the room next door where cats ready to be adopted are playing, sleeping and watching what's happening. Chairs, rugs on the floor and a couch provide plenty of areas for spending time alongside the felines.
The cats at Btown Meow Cat Cafe are from the Bloomington Animal Shelter. If someone wants to adopt one of them, the paperwork can be completed at the cafe.
While the goal is to adopt cats, Amber Moore explained she wants to provide people a place where they can be with cats. Before opening her own cat cafe, Moore said she visited several. There are currently about 144 cat cafes across the U.S.
"People can come just to spend time with the cats," she said. "They're good for people who have anxiety. Plus there's all the students (at Indiana University) who left home and miss their animals."
Currently there are five cats, ages 1-5 years, who live at the cat cafe. Fluffy is quiet and reserved and recently spent time watching visitors from her perch above. Chanterelle and Daisy are more curious and playful and spent time cuddling and pouncing on cat toys. Snow White was a little more reserved; Tokee remained under a chair, watching from a safe distance.
While the goal is to find forever homes for all the cats, Moore is already growing attached. "The first day we had them, it was hard to leave," she said, adding they are learning more about the personalities of the cats every day.
What's available for to eat, drink at Btown Cat Cafe
The major focus of Btown Meow Cat Cafe is cats, but the cafe serves food and drink, too. There are pies, cookies, muffins, pastries, black coffee, lattes, cappuccino, hot chocolate, hot tea as well as cold drinks available to sip while watching cats through the large window into the next room.
