A cafe that’s been in business for nearly eight months booked a one-way ticket out of the State College Regional Airport.
Up Up and Away Cafe — located inside the airport — is set to close Saturday, the business posted Monday on Facebook. The eatery is scheduled to be open 5 a.m. to noon through Friday.
The decision, according to the post, “did not come lightly.”
“We have been brainstorming ways to stay and make it work,” the post read. “The added pressure of all of us squeezing our budgets during this time of year paired with the lack of flights going out daily and limited cities to fly to were no match for a small business like ours.”
The Centre County Airport Authority wrote in a statement it was made aware in October of the cafe’s closing for “personal reasons.”
A new cafe is planning to “quickly take over operations.” It’s expected to offer a broader menu, apparel, longer hours and may sell alcohol.
The authority’s board of directors, which are “very supportive of keeping a cafe in the airport,” plans to discuss the new shop at its next meeting.
“While air traffic has not returned to the 2019 volume, the State College Regional Airport is on target to see (approximately) 138,000 passengers departing our facility this year,” the authority wrote. “That is the same average passengers the airport saw between 2008-2017 while the Irving’s Cafe operated successfully.”
Up Up and Away Cafe opened in April. It offered an assortment of hot and cold drinks, as well as breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, wraps and baked goods.
Sister location Bees Knees Coffee, 114 E. College Ave., will remain open. The Pleasant Gap location is set to offer drinks, baked goods and breakfast sandwiches 7-11 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8-11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Canned drinks are available for pickup or delivery on Wednesdays.
