Station House Cafe, the 46-year-old brunch and seafood restaurant in Point Reyes, will have its last take-out service late this month as it prepares for closure.

Sheryl Cahill, owner of the restaurant, made the announcement in a since-removed Facebook post that indicated May 31 would be their final service day following an exorbitant rent hike, Eater wrote.

According to Eater, the Facebook post stated Station House Cafe’s rent would increase by nearly 300% — from $8,372 to $28,000 per month — with no option to renew after one year. An alternative four-year lease proposal for $21,000 a month that included “restrictive and onerous conditions,” was also on the table.

“The current economic conditions and health concerns of COVID-19 create additional stumbling blocks in a time that was already challenging for restaurants to thrive,” Cahill told SFGATE over email. “Our lease renewal, at a higher cost than the business could afford, was just the final straw.”

Cahill couldn’t speak on why the landlord’s rent offer was so high and simply said that they “were not able to find agreeable terms that would work for both parties.”

The increase in rent comes as Station House Cafe has struggled to support staff amid shelter in place orders. The business had recently applied for a Paycheck Protection Program loan and also launched a GoFundMe page that asked to raise $35,000 in order to help pay for staff health insurance premiums.

Cahill said that its become increasingly difficult for small, independent restaurants in San Francisco and beyond to remain viable as the cost of labor, health insurance and operational expenses continue to soar higher than the revenue an average-priced menu can support.

When asked about the future of Station House Cafe and the possibility of opening in a different location, Cahill said it’s a possibility, but no plans are set at this time. If that does happen, it would mean the restaurant would need to adapt to new service models, a pared-down menu and hard work, Cahill added.

“If we can find a new home to welcome back our team, our valued patrons and the amazing Bay Area musicians that have made Station House Cafe come alive on Sunday afternoons for all these years, we will be very happy to start over again.”

Station House Cafe is located at 11180 Hwy 1 in Point Reyes Station.
