Local Eats: Try ‘simple, honest food’ at Beezy’s Cafe in Ypsilanti - MLive.com

YPSILANTI, MI -- One of downtown Ypsilanti’s favorite breakfast and brunch spots has been loaded with guests and orders, even during the coronavirus pandemic.

Beezy’s Cafe, 20 N. Washington St., has been serving a mix of comfort foods for breakfast and lunch since November 2009, but General Manager Jesse Arehart-Jacobs said business has been “shockingly busy” during the pandemic.

“It was wonderful to feel, but also so incredibly busy. We brought more people back. We opened up outdoor seating,” Arehart-Jacobs said, adding the plan for the winter is “to open up our two existing dining rooms indoors.”

Beezy’s serves a plethora of familiar dishes from eggs, sandwiches, bagels and salads, but the customer favorites are those leaning on the comfort food side, Arehart-Jacobs said. Many prefer the breakfast burrito and French toast.

“It felt like people have been holed up in their house craving those things,”Arehart-Jacobs said.

The breakfast burrito has locally-made chorizo from Dos Hermanos Market in Ypsilanti, scrambled eggs, shredded cheddar jack cheese in a flour tortilla, which is sealed with bacon fat, and served with a side of seasoned fries.

Other popular items include the turkey avocado club and Beezy’s salad, which is packed with mixed greens, pesto ranch dressing, carrots, radish, croutons, bacon, muenster cheese, avocado, cucumber, cherry tomato, red onion, sliced chicken breast and egg salad.

Among the staff, the pepper and egg sandwich and honey mustard sauce on the side is a favorite.

“We make all of our own sauces in-house,” Arehart-Jacobs said. “If you see a guest ordering home fries with honey mustard on the side, they know someone who works here.”

Some of the other sauces include sun-dried tomato pesto mayo, blue cheese pesto mayo and a house deli sauce, which has mayonnaise and tomato puree.

Beezy’s runs by the “simple, honest food” slogan, which adds to the cafe’s identity, Arehart-Jacobs said.

“A big part of Beezy’s identity has been hospitality but in a genuine way," Arehart-Jacobs said. "It’s a place where people do make genuine connections with each other and I adore that. There’s a lot of personality when you go to Beezy’s. We are kind of a collection of very warm, funny people who really enjoy what we do and the people we’re serving.”
